SPORTS COUNSELING
While managing a highly
sophisticated business and business litigation practice focused on counseling
the business needs of clients in the local community, Mr. Price has also gained
extraordinary experience as a sports attorney. Mr. Price began to represent the
NBA’s Sacramento
Kings when the Kings first relocated to Sacramento in 1985. When the Kings’
owners built first one and then a second sports and entertainment facility, Mr.
Price became actively involved, not merely representing Arco Arena on a
day-to-day basis, but also serving as litigation counsel in the contractual
disputes which arose from the arena design and construction.
In 1993, the
Sacramento Knights brought professional soccer to Sacramento. In 1997, the WNBA
awarded one of its charter franchises to Sacramento. Mr. Price has served as
general counsel to all three of Sacramento’s professional sports teams. Today, he serves as outside general counsel for the Kings' organization. Mr. Price has developed a unique
understanding of the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement and the myriad of
antitrust and contractual issues involving professional athletes and sports
teams. Mr. Price has been responsible for the preparation of broadcasting,
advertising, marketing and employment agreements entered into by the Kings and the Monarchs. He has been involved not only in reviewing NBA player
contracts, but also in team or Arena litigation as well as all arbitration
proceedings arising from union-related labor grievances at Arco Arena.
Mr. Price recognizes the unique opportunity presented
to him in representing three of Sacramento’s professional sports teams, but
relishes the ability to become involved, on a daily basis, with such captivating
issues. Mr. Price’s sports expertise has, in recent years, presented other
sports-related legal opportunities. Mr. Price, for example, has represented one
of the riders on the professional mountain biking circuit; and has also
represented one of the organizations seeking to bring minor league baseball to
Sacramento. In recognizing Mr. Price as one of Sacramento's few "sports
lawyers," the Sacramento Daily Recorder noted that it was Mr. Price's
"thoroughness and attention to detail" which have enabled him to continue to
represent the Kings [for what is now a quarter of a century].
